Chapter 1: The Years After

"Here's your drink, __(y/n)-chan!" You heard a familiar blonde say as she set down your beverage on the table.

"Arigato, Lucy-chan." You smiled at her, your hand reaching out to grab where you believed she put the cup, but grabbed the air instead.

"Ah, sorry! It's right here," Lucy pushed the drink gently closer to your hand as you grasped it, bringing it to your lips.

"No problem, thanks again."

"Ne, ne ___(y/n), let's check out the new job postings!" Natsu shouted excitedly.

"I wonder what missions we have this time!" Happy joined in as the fire dragon grabbed your hand, taking you towards the board.

"Natsu! Don't pull her so roughly like that!" Lucy scolded slightly.

"It can't be helped. He's always excited whenever new missions come in." Erza shook her head slightly.

"New missions? All right, let's see what we got." Gray was standing beside you, reading quickly through the postings.

"Gray-kun, you're pants." You knew he was naked without even looking at the ice boy.

"Gaah!" Gray looked down to find his pants missing as he ran off to find where he threw them.

"Pick a mission, __(y/n)!" Natsu said as you nodded, pointing at a random one.

"Read it to me, please?" You asked and he complied easily.

"It says there are a group of thieves terrorizing the town Kunugi. The townspeople are starting to accuse one another and the mayor says it's starting to get chaotic." [1]

"If we complete this mission, he'll pay us in 80,000 jewels!" Happy added.

"Oh wow. The jewels sound good, but that town really needs our help. Shall we take this one?"

"All right! Let's go! C'mon, Lucy! Gray! Erza! We got a new mission!" Nastu began to run out of the door, clutching the mission paper.

"Matte! Do you even know what time it is?" You grabbed onto his shoulder before he could go any further.

"She's right, Natsu. The trains don't run at this time. If we wanna get there, we'd have to provide our own carriage and that might take a lot longer than just waiting one night."

"We should also make a plan." Erza voted herself to be the one to do such a task.

"Aw man, and I was all fired up." Natsu pouted.

"Gehehe, you'll probably mess it up! You should leave it to me, Salamander!"

"Yeah, right, Gajeel! You'd probably go to the wrong town!"

"You wanna go!?" Gajeel's eye twitched as both men were pressing forehead against forehead.

"G-gajeel, calm down." Levy sweat dropped, trying to pacify the iron dragon.

"Well, it's getting late so I think I'm gonna head home." Lucy stretched her arms, watching Natsu and Gajeel begin to brawl.

"Kiotsukette, ne?" You told the celestial mage as she wished everyone a good night.

"Looks like you're going home, too." Erza said as you sensed a familiar presence entering through the thick doors of the guild.

"Mysto-kun!" You smiled as the blue haired male approached you.

"Ready?" He asked and you nodded in response. You walked to where the table was, grabbing your things as both of you left, telling everyone you would see them tomorrow.. You held onto his arm, following closely beside him as you trusted that he wouldn't lead you into any objects.

It has been four years since your vision was taken away. Not by disease or accident, but it had been done intentionally. You fought with a man who used dark magic during a mission and he cast a spell to blind you. You had tried to cope and lived how you did before the curse, but Master requested that you live with someone while they tried to find a solution in returning your sight.

You objected at first, but in the end, it was for the best.

"How was your mission?" you asked Mystogan.

"Not too difficult. What about you?"

"I did a small mission this morning, but Natsu and I found a new one."

"They posted new ones today?"

"Mhm! A few minutes before you came."

Both of you stopped in front of Mystogan's home, the boy opening the door for you. You and Mystogan have been friends for a very long time. You two were the closest pair in the entire guild!

"Did you eat yet?" Mystogan asked, shaking your head in response. You usually waited until you both went home so that he wasn't alone at the dinner table. Your routines were almost the same every day. One of you would wait until that person returned to the guild before going to the house. Of course, if a mission would take more than a day, you two would be informed ahead of time.

You helped Mystogan set up the table, having become more independent these past few years. You sat down at your usual chair after having washed your hands. You heard Mystogan sit across from you, indicating that you both were ready to feast,

"Itadakimasu!" You said, Mystogan nodding as he mentally repeated the phrase. The both of you conversed about the highlights of today and other stories worth remembering. Although he was considered as a 'shy' and 'quiet' person, around you, he was open and comfortable. He trusted you the most since you were his first long time friend. [2]

"Do you want more water?" He asked you, noticing that your glass was halfway empty.

"Hmmm? Oh! It's all right. I can get it myself."

"Please, let me get it. I'm getting up anyway." You heard him insist as you tried to tell him to stay put. You both attempted to grab the cup, Mystogan knocking it on the table since the amount of force was a little more than yours.

"Kyaa!" You let out a small yelp, pushing the chair back slightly when you felt the cold contents spill on your lap and down your legs.

"I-I'm sorry!" Mystogan stood up immediately, rushing to where the kitchen towels were.

"It's all right! I was just surprised. I didn't know you were reaching for my cup, too." You were about to stand, but you felt a cloth being dabbed on your thighs.

"I shouldn't have done that..." He felt guilty for making a mess on you.

"Mysto-kun, it's okay, really! I'm fine. It's only water."

Mystogan said nothing, looking up from where his position. He was knelt beside you on one knee to better clean the damp areas of your person. He let out a sigh, seeing you staring straight ahead at nothing in particular. Your eyes were a cloudy ___(eye color), obvious that they were not functioning. Years have passed by and he hasn't found anything to break the curse. He was beginning to get scared that he may not be able to fulfill his promise of helping return your eyesight.

"Gomen, __(y/n).." You felt Mystogan's forehead touch your leg, surprised by his slight mood.

"Ne, ne doushita?" Your hand slowly lowered itself to where you assumed his head was, then your guess confirmed when soft locks of hair were felt. He took his mask off at home since the only other person who was with him was you. It didn't matter that you were blind, you have seen his face many times before. Of course, only when it was you and him. [3]

"I just don't like causing trouble for you." He knew how stressful it was for you to live with your disability and he always tried his best to make things easier for you. It wasn't that he thought you were incapable of doing anything, but he wanted to at least be of some use.

"Silly, you're never any trouble to me." You gently stroked his hair, a small smile on your lips as Mystogan stayed quiet. He was too hard on himself sometimes.

"Ne, let's clean up the table so we can start getting ready for tonight."

Mystogan and you left together in the morning towards the Fairy Tail Guild. You weren't near the building and you can hear how loud it was.

"I hear Natsu-kun," you laughed a bit. Once at the door, Mystogan was about to open it, until you pulled onto his arm roughly, his body colliding with yours. Right where Mystogan was standing, the door was engulfed with a familiar flame.

"Oh no! The door!"

"I ain't gonna lose to you, Gray!"

"Heh! Neither am I!"

"Oi! Salamander! How dare you ruin my breakfast?!"

"Fight like a man!!"

"My cake! You're all going to pay!"

"Gray-samaaa!"

Yepp, just another usual day at the guild.

"Just had a feeling that the door was gonna decide to burn itself." You joked a bit, Mystogan's back against your chest, holding him since you were trying to protect him from Natsu's flames.

"Thanks." Mystogan was surprised at how keen your magical awareness was but then again, he knew you weren't someone that could be easily defeated. Master allowed you to take S-class missions, of course, with another S mage. You were already considered that strong of a fighter, but the only obstacle was to take the exam. You were suppose to have taken it, but that week before, one of your five precious senses was lost in that terrible fight. [4]

"Let's head inside while Natsu-kun isn't blowing fire this way." You said to the blue haired male, letting him go, but still held onto his arm.

" __(y/n)! Mystogan! Fight me!!" Natsu was charging your way as Mystogan let out a sigh. Natsu always liked to fight those who were stronger than them. He just loved the challenge. Mystogan formed a sign with his free hand, freezing Natsu in his spot then lifting him high in the air.

"Ohayou, mina-san," you greeted everyone at the guild as they responded back with the same phrase or a simple wave.

"Oiii! Put me down!" Natsu was swimming in the air, trying to find a way to bring himself back to the ground. Mystogan cancelled the spell, the dragon boy falling  right on top of Gray.

"Watch where you're going!" Gray shouted as he pushed Natsu off him.

"As if I knew where I was gonna land!"

"Gray, your pants." Cana said causally, flipping through her cards.

"What's going on now?" Lucy entered through the broken door, not surprised to see her family so lively.

"Looks like our team is here. Let's head out." Erza then grabbed Natsu and Gray by their ears, forcing them to stop their brawl with Gajeel and Elfman.

"Ganbatte, mina!" Wendy wished them well, hoping that their next mission, she would be allowed to go with.

"Arigato, Wendy! We'll try to be back as soon as possible!" Lucy winked.

Erza, Lucy, Gray and Happy were near the entrance, waiting for you to leave with them.

"Since the town is far and I'm not sure how long it'll take us to be finished, you don't have to wait for me here. If anything, I'll just call." You both had lacrima crystals for communication purposes, always carrying it whenever either of you were out.

"That's fine. I'm not sure about my mission either." Mystogan still had to look at the request board.

"Mmm..sokka. Ma, kiotsukette, ne?" You embraced your closest friend, letting go after a few seconds. He handed your bag that he carried for you, watching you walk towards your current team.  [5]

"Yosh! Ready to go, Happy!?" Natsu yelled happily.

"Aye, sir!"

"Want me to carry your bag?" You felt Gray take your hand, linking it with his arm so that he could help guide you.

"No, thank you. I'm okay. It's not that heavy anyway."

"C'mon, let's start walking. We don't wanna be late for the train." Erza began to wheel her huge cart of things, everyone sweat dropping at her ridiculous amount of baggage.

Mystogan turned to the request board after watching your form get further away from the guild. He found one that was most appealing before his body dissolved into a mist.

He began to think back on the first time you both met, remembering how bright and welcoming your smile and aura was. He didn't have many friends in Earthland and Edolas, so everything he did with you was new. From becoming playmates to developing a deeper relationship, Mystogan has learned a lot from you. He knew that there weren't a lot of friendly people so he was grateful for having met you first.

There was one thing he felt guilty about for never having been honest with you about. And that was his real home, Edolas. Yes, he has told you his real name, but other than that, he couldn't give out information about Anima and how he wasn't from this world. There was a time where he thought that his past would be revealed when the Earthland Jellal made himself infamous. Edolas Jellal was forced to hide his appearance and use the name 'Mystogan'. You didn't question the similarities between both Jellals, understanding that two people can look alike and share the same name. Instead, you continued to support and protect Mystogan's identity.

A sudden thought made him wear a frown and ache his heart. The thought of having to leave you. What if he managed to close all the animas? He would most likely have to return to Edolas since he wasn't originally from Earthland, not only that, but he had his duty as the prince. His kingdom needed a new leader and he couldn't possibly abandon them if his father continued his senseless operation. Although there were people that needed him, Mystogan needed you. You were the one he made precious memories with and every day he looked forward to making many more. Mystogan shook those horrid thoughts away, focusing on the here and now. Anima was one of his responsibilities, but right now, he prioritized you.

"A-a-achoo!" You let out sneeze, making sure to cover your nose and mouth.

"Bless you." Erza said.

"Arigato." You said, sniffling slightly.

"Sneezy, sneezy achoo! Someone special is thinking about you!" Lucy winked as you let out a small blush. [6]

"Aw no, I doubt it. It was probably some dust that triggered it."

"Nonsense! Someone is definitely thinking about you!"

"She's right, and we all know who it is." Erza smiled as your group was close to the train station.

"Eh? Who?" Natsu asked, hands clasped behind his head.

"Keh. You don't know? It's pretty obvious." Gray responded.

"Urusei! As if I'd pay attention to those kinds of things!"

"You don't pay attention at all!"

"Oh yeah? Well, if you think you know who it is, then why not enlighten us?"

"It's obviously Elfman." Gray nodded his head as if confirming the answer with himself.

"Ehhhh?" Lucy and you replied.

"How so?" The Celestial Mage questioned.

"Well, he always says how __(y/n) is the manliest man out of all men."

"I don't really think Elfman means anything by that." Lucy, Erza and you weren't too convinced with Gray's evidence.

"Baaaaka! See? You're wrong!" Natsu laughed.

"Yarou! Then who do you think it is?!"

"Duuuh! It's Gajeel!"

"That's wrong, too!" Lucy retorted.

"Then it's Max!"

"Jet!"

"Droy!"

"Reedus!"

"Loke!"

"Fried!"

"Bixlow!"

The two boys kept going, making you wonder how they got so fired up over a small comment.

"You're both wrong!" Erza hit Natsu and Gray over their heads, making them whimper at her strength.

"Itee!" Natsu hissed, rubbing the spot where her fist met with his head, "then if we're wrong, who is it, hmmm?"

"It's Mystogan." Erza said confidently, as your small blush became darker.

"Oh, la la!" You heard Happy flying around your head, "he looooooooooves you!"

"Ehh? Chigau! Just as a friend!"

The conversation continued until the train station, Erza finally ending the topic when Natsu and Gray were close to another argument. Whatever they assumed what was going on between you and Mystogan, you were the only one who truly knew how you felt about the blue haired man.

"There's a little step here so be careful." You heard Gray say as you lifted your foot cautiously before landing it on the floor. Gray led the way to where you six would be seated, feeling for the furniture so you knew when to lower yourself. Once positioned, Gray sat beside you and the rest followed.

"It's going to take a while so let's just relax." Erza sat beside Happy and Lucy, Natsu sitting on your free side, now in between the ice and fire boys.

"All right! I can't wait to kick some butt!"

"I agree with ya on that one!"

"Those thieves better-" Before Natsu could finish his sentence, he began to melt into the seat, his head now on your lap, "gurghhhh."

"Oh no! We should've asked Wendy to cast Troia on him!" Happy cried out.

"Wendyyyyyyy..." Natsu sobbed, knowing that the train ride was going to be a long one.

"Wendy isn't the only one who knows how to cure his motion sickness." Erza walked over to him, making him sit up. She suddenly pounded her fist into his abdomen, the poor boy falling back onto your lap.

"I-is it really okay to keep using that method?" Lucy looked at Natsu then at Erza, grateful that she wasn't prone to queasiness.

"At least he'll be a bit more relaxed?" You let out a strained laugh. The rest of you decided to either nap or keep busy during the trip. You choose to sleep, closing your eyes and using Gray's shoulder as a pillow. [7] The conversation before made you remember how much your best friend has sacrificed for you and how you two became even closer than before. You were truly lucky.

'Mysto-kun...' you mentally whispered his name, mind drifting to the past.

" 'choo!" Mystogan sneezed into his mask, shaking his head slightly to compose himself.

"Bless you, young man!" He heard an elderly woman reply as she watered her pots of flowers outside her home, Mystogan nodding in thanks.

'I can't afford to be getting a cold at this time.' He thought, thinking of foods to increase his immune system as he continued to exit Mangolia.

They have that same wonderful blue hair! haha Also, Lily did mention that Mystogan tried to not contact with Earthland ppl too much...but in this case, Mystogan didn't mind having a strong friendship with the reader lol
